WHAT IT TAKES
Breaking 100
This is by far the easiest thing to do. Most of you already have what it takes to break this score, but you don't have the right mindset and are trying to play the game in ways that are beyond your abilities. You're probably bouncing your tee shots off of someones Veranda or backyard BBQ 3 or 4 times per round-- playing the wrong courses and wrong tee boxes because your ego tells you to. Just keeping the ball in play and learn speed on the green will accomplish shooting under 100. This will still require some practice as with all golf skills, but is the quickest way to hit this mark.

Breaking 90
This would be considered Bogey Golf! We're getting in to practice time. Not only do you need to start having a competent short game, you need to start refining your swing and start getting a LOT more in to the mental side of the game. The Verandas and BBQ's are feeling a tad more safe (I said a TAD). This is where we start to chip and putt more than half of our practice and stop banging entire buckets of drivers and everyone favorite 7 iron. The wedges will start to be our new best friends-- 100 yards and in is where it's at. No more than 3 shots to get the ball in the hole beyond this point.

Breaking 80
Yup, this is shooting in the 70's and you should be surrounded by a glowing light and hearing church music right about now. Things are looking pretty serious now, and if you're already consistently shooting in the 80's and want to break below 70, the amount and type of work you'll need to put in is a whole new ball game. If you're already practicing a lot, I can guarantee you aren't practicing the right things. It's called purposeful practice. The difference between the 80's and the 70's is your short game. Not just putting, but the wedges as well! Did I mention putting? The wedge practice can be fun and there are several drills to work on, but it's something you must force yourself to do a lot of the time and there is no way around it. You need to OWN 15ft and in. That means 5 footers become tap ins to you. I can show you the correct path to accomplish this goal so that the light is blinding and you'll need earplugs for the church music.
